Girls n’ Women and Sport programs have been developed to increase sport opportunities for girls and women with a philosophy that encourages FUN, Participation…. and a slogan that says EVERYONE GETS TO PLAY.
Girls n’ Women and Sport Office formerly known as ‘Women and Sport’ was endorsed by City Council and initiated in 1985. City of Ottawa Parks and Recreation Branch under the astute direction of Don Gamble and led by Jan St. Amour recognized the importance to support sport opportunities for girls and women to level the playing field. Girls n’ Women and Sport program objectives focus on having fun, making new friends, and developing skills in order to build self-confidence while playing in a team setting.
In a 1983 survey conducted in conjunction with the City of Ottawa and the School Liaison Committee it was determined that girls participated 60% less than males in group oriented activities, competitive and inexpensive programs. Girls n’ Women and Sport continues to offer affordable, accessible sport opportunities to over 6000 girls and women. Our philosophy is Everyone Gets To Play with Nobody on the sidelines.
